Shrubs for Cutflowers

Shrubs are a natural choice for sustainable landscapes. We often use these to add interesting structure and form to our arrangements. Native shrubs have the advantage of being adapted to our climate and will also encourage birds and butterflies to your garden. Add a few well chosen favorites and enjoy the benefits all year. The shrubs we use the most on the farm are native and non-native hydrangeas, Lilac, Deciduous or Winterberry Holly and American Cranberry Viburnum. More recent additions include flowering Quince, plum and cherry and Carolina Allspice.

Hydrangea

Hydrangea LimelightHydrangea blooms are invaluable for a strong foundation in a larger arrangement. The late varieties are often used in dried arrangements. Hydrangea quercifolia, or Oak Leaf Hydrangea, is an easily grown shrub; native to the southeastern United States that will provide interest from the time the white panicles open in midsummer. The flowers will fade to pink just in time to complement the showy autumn colors of the leaves. This attractively shaped large shrub performs well in sun or shade in almost any soil.

Viburnums

Viburnums bloom in spring and summer and many varieties have pleasantly scented flowers.
