Chrysanthemum how to- the short version
- Growing Chrysanthemums is easy and rewarding
- Starter plants & plugs, are usually a sure bet. Cutting are quite easy.
- For cuttings use very small pots, and extra well drained soil, (I add perlite to Promix™)
- Do not cover, heat mats are rarely needed, rooting hormone is helpful but not necessary
- Make sure to put the cutting where you will mist or water just the top foliage. Never in the direct sun.
- Average room temperatures work for us. 70°F
- Rooting should take place in just a few weeks. Wait a few more weeks to check them.
- You should see new green growth before you give them any significant water, fertilizer or checking.
- Many chrysanthemum grower use large pots for the summer months that can be protected or brought inside for the winter.
- Cut flower growers often, grow these in High Tunnels and try to over-winter the Mother plants in the High Tunnel.
- You can also take cuttings, root them and bring those in for the winter.
- These chrysanthemums are not hardy in zone 6, a few in zone 7.
- I mention hardiness on the 2 I have that are winter hardy in Zone 6. (currently not for sale)
- Be ready for your cuttings arrival with soil and pots, they need to be stuck(planted) asap.
- Rooted plugs are shipped out of their pots, they need to be planted asap also
- Expect a few days of wilted -sulking behavior from you mums.
